If you want to pursue a career in complementary therapy the first step is to find the right course. Apart from costs and location that may be limiting factors the main considerations should be:
Training Staff - Make sure that the staff who'll be teaching you have at least three to five years clinical experience and ideally, though not essential, teaching qualifications. Teaching is a skill in itself.
Student Numbers - Smaller classes are better. Make sure that there won't be more than 12 students to a teacher.
Breadth of Knowledge - Find out what is covered in each module, for example how many different types of massage are covered. Anatomy and physiology needs to cover the skin, the skeletal/muscular system, the respiratory system, the nervous and endocrine systems as well as many common disorders of these systems.
Supervised Practice - Look at opportunities for supervised clinical experience - how much practice will you get?
Assessment - Some people are better with coursework; others prefer a written exam. Make sure the balance is the most appropriate for you.
Visit the college - talk to students and try to sit in on a class before signing up for any course.
Please contact the training establishment direct.
